Undergraduate Curriculum
The undergraduate public horticulture concentration aims to prepare students for professional careers in a diverse array of public horticultural institutions, including
- public gardens (botanical gardens and arboreta)
- greening organizations
- municipal parks and gardens
- cemeteries
- museums with public landscapes
- nature centers
- zoological parks.
This approved, new concentration within the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences is unique, as it provides students
- a solid grounding in diverse disciplines, including ornamental horticulture, leadership and related issues, and communications
- opportunities for experiential learning, including two internships, The Triad Internship and the Capstone Practicum
- three advanced short courses in not for profit management within the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, and a senior- level organizational leadership course
- learning flexibility through a large block of eighteen elective hours, allowing students to focus on business, education, collections, or many other interest areas
- new courses in public horticulture, including "Public Gardens Management," a "Public Horticulture Seminar," and the two internship courses
- exposure to the many public gardens and professionals associated with The Center for Public Horticulture
- a competitive resume
